How to Get Backlinks
So, you want to know how to get backlinks? First we should cover what a backlink is and how they work on the world-wide web.
A backlink is a “referral source” in the form of a URL that connects one website to another.
An example of a URL would be:
If this URL was placed on another website, it would let users know that they could visit this website by following and/or clicking it.
Backlinks Are Digital Referral Sources
Think of a backlink as good word of mouth. When someone out there in the world talks about you and your services they are promoting your content, business or niche to those around them through positive outreach via conversation. In turn, it helps build your network.
Backlinks work the same way, on the internet. When your website link is placed on another website, it lets users visiting know that you are being recommended. If they trust the referral source than they will automatically look at you as a trusted website or entity as well.
Your Referral Source Matters
Earlier we mentioned that backlinks are analogous to good word of mouth. This can also work the other way. Imagine someone you don’t trust endorses a product or service. You would be less likely to try it or use it – wouldn’t you?
Getting backlinks from websites that are untrustworthy, spammy, or that do not add value to your content does more harm than good. It’s important that your backlinks are coming from websites on the internet that are valuable and specific to your websites niche.
So I Thought You Were Going To Tell Me How To Get Backlinks
The truth is, if you want to know how to get backlinks, you’re going to have to work for them. There is just no other way around it.
While many companies or “SEO Experts” claim that they can get you high quality (sometimes called PR) backlinks, you are better off trying to do so yourself.
What these companies do, in most cases is spam your website wherever they can think of, without adding any true value to them.
Personally, we recommend starting your backlink campaigns through free social media platforms:
- Yahoo Answers
- Bing Answers
- Facebook Like pages
- Facebook Groups
Using the platforms listed above, you can begin to send strong social cues from these platforms to your website. All of the suggestions listed below can be used as referral sources for backlinking your content, if done properly.
For instance, you can search the Yahoo database for questions that relate to your niche or business demographic. When you find a question, you are the authority on, you can answer it and include a link to one of your websites, blogs or the home page. Same goes for Bing answers.
With Instagram, Facebook & Twitter you can distribute creative social media marketing advertisements for your website that link back to blogs or other pages.
Social media is a great source for referral traffic and backlinks. It should be utilized first when starting a backlinking campaign.
Other Ways to Get Backlinks
If you have exhausted your options through social media trying to get backlinks, you can begin to locate other referral sources.
In most instances these sources will come in the form of other websites that discuss the same topics your website does. All you have to do is reach out to the webmaster and ask he or she to insert your website as a cited source for their own blogs or content.
An example of an e-mail I would send to another webmaster would look similar to this:
“To whom it may concern,
I was reaching out to you today regarding the blog I found on your website. I noticed that we have a similar blog as well that verifies the information you’re providing to your readers. Would you be interested in swapping links with us so that we can use you as a cited source and in turn you can use us as well?
Thank you for your consideration”
In many cases, you won’t get a response back regarding your inquiry but on the off chance that you do, you just created a full circle for referral links.

Do All Backlinks Count?
While getting a backlink on another website is a great accomplishment, you must keep in mind that some backlinks don’t count. Blasphemy, right?
There is what is known as a “No Follow” backlink. What this means is that humans can follow the link to another website or page but search engines do not count it as a referral source. This is done by editing the code inside of the html to designate the link as a “No Follow” backlink.
It’s also important to remember that the best backlinks use anchor text. Anchor text is when you link a set of words to the URL, rather than just writing out the URL it’s self in plain text.
When using anchor text, make sure it’s relevant to the page you are linking back to.
For instance,. If you want to link to a page about the best ways to engage your followers on Instagram through the use of your grid, you would backlink your URL to the phrase “Creative Instagram Grid Tips & Tricks”. See what we did there?
